What is NDIS & How Can Access Foundation Help You?

NDIS: A Broad Definition

NDIS, that is the National Disability Insurance Scheme, is an implementation by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). NDIS provides support to people who are with a permanent disability that has a direct and substantial effect on their ability to carry out everyday activities.

The kind of NDIS Support that a person can expect includes :

Support in order to become more independent
Encouragement to become a more involved member of the community
Assistance in getting employment, and
Moral support that helps to achieve an overall improved well-being

By directing funds towards reasonable as well as necessary steps which can help people with disabilities in achieving their goals, instead of funding only the mainstream services, NDIS helps a person with a disability successfully connect with those services. It is through proving reasonable and essential support - the kind that is associated with a person’s day-to-day living; this scheme helps improve his/her participation in their community as well as the workforce. Such support could include a piece of equipment, like a wheelchair, or home and car modifications, or it could be building their skills to help them get better learning and employment opportunities.

A person already receiving disability services will have someone contact them before their region can be scheduled to get a transition to the NDIS. People who are currently availing services from any defined programs are generally considered to be satisfying the disability requirements without requiring any further evidence. In case they aren’t receiving any such services, they can apply under NDIS, but only after it has become available in their region, in the course of the staged roll-out all across Australia.

People with a disability who are not eligible to apply for individual funding under the NDIS can still avail support from this scheme with the help of information, referrals and links to the community and also the mainstream support services.

Criteria for Eligibility:

For a person to be eligible to receive support under the NDIS, they must:

Have a permanent disability that significantly impacts their functional capacity, or if they require access to early intervention support,
Be a citizen or a permanent resident of Australia, or be a protected Special Category Visa holder here,
Be no more than 65 years old while first applying under this scheme,
Be living in a region where the NDIS has become available,
Meet the age or phasing requirements for that region at the time of the staged roll-out across Australia, if so applicable.
